Mia Weber is the Executive Editor of New York Family magazine, part of the largest multi-platform family media company in New York City. The glossy publication caters to savvy NYC families and expecting parents, and offers an exciting assortment of cultural and lifestyle coverage in both print and digital form.
Here at Calaméo, we love to share our clients’ stories with the rest of our community, which is why we recently had the opportunity to chat with Mia from New York Family magazine about her experiences adapting to the digital age and the role Calaméo plays in the publication.
Tell us about your use of digital publications.
We like to offer our audience an e-reader option because it means we can show even more people the beautiful work our design team does for our print magazines. And if we are ever working with new PR teams, editorial contacts, or clients who want an efficient way to see what we’re all about, sending them a link to the digital version of our print magazines is a great way to do that.

What are the biggest challenges you face with your print magazines?
Adapting to the ever-changing digital landscape and the new ways that people consume media is always a challenge, because you never want to get complacent or assume that what’s working at one point in time will always be the best way. It’s been a positive challenge, though, because it’s ensured that our editorial team is always learning and always striving to serve our readers in the best way.

How has using Calaméo helped you to overcome these challenges?
Calaméo is a wonderful tool for bridging the gap between the beauty of print and the convenience of digital. The final product is clean and easy-to-use, which is, of course, vital in order to keep readers on a digital page.

Furthermore, our design team is consistently able to publish our digital editions with ease and time efficiency. Our Art Director has also noted that Calaméo’s interface is intuitive, and that it’s easy to make an edit after publication if need be.
Is there a particular Calaméo feature that you like the most?
I love how it looks just like the print magazine! The flipbook effect is great and the overall presentation really does our design work justice. Plus, it’s great to be able to easily include relevant links within the e-reader when we need to.
Does Calaméo’s editing tools help maximize the digital publishing experience for your readers?
Yes, absolutely. By using the Calaméo Editor, we are able to take our print magazine a step further by making all of our links clickable, which is a benefit to both our readers and our advertisers.
Where does the future hold for New York Family magazine?
As 2017 unfolds, we are excited to continue growing our live events business, as well as produce high-quality editorial content to support and supplement these events. Of course, we also look forward to a fun year with our regular every-other-month print magazines, which we kicked off with a lovely cover feature on Harry Connick Jr. for our January/February 2017 issue.
And finally, what’s the single biggest reason why you would recommend Calaméo?
Our magazine presents beautifully on Calaméo, and it’s easy to find and share the links to each individual issue. It’s really easy to flip through the e-reader and get the feeling of the physical magazine being in front of you.
